March, 2025 – The Shropshire Golf Centre, owned and operated by BGL (Burhill Group Ltd) has made history by announcing its youngest ever Lady Club Captain for 2025. Jessica Pitchford officially stepped into the role last month, aged just 21 years old.
Pitchford began her golf journey at Telford Golf Club at age eight, later serving as Junior Captain and representing Shropshire & Herefordshire’s Juniors and Women’s First Team. Now playing off a Handicap Index of 4.8, she is also the youngest person to join the England Golf Captains membership.
Reflecting on her journey, Pitchford credits The Shropshire’s thriving ladies’ section and junior programme for her development, while also looking to the future. “I’m passionate about ensuring the club is preparing for the next decade, not just the next year or two,” she said.
“A key goal of mine is to create more opportunities for competitive players within the ladies’ section while also ensuring newer players feel encouraged and supported. This year, I will be working on a buddy-up system where experienced players guide beginners onto the course. This will build confidence by providing a welcoming pathway into the game.”
Pitchford’s connection to The Shropshire Golf Centre spans several generations already, with her father, uncle, great aunt, sister and even her 90-year old grandfather currently part of the membership!
“I have fond memories of me and my sister playing rounds with Grandad Kel and Uncle George at Wrekin Golf Club, where they were both members. They taught us so much on the course, and I hope we are doing them proud.”
In addition to her leadership role, Pitchford is looking to launch her teaching career with a PGCE in September 2025, specialising in Physical Education. On the golf course, she aims to defend her club championship title and compete in both the English Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship and the English Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool and Wallasey this summer.
